Olev Avaste (1933-1991) was an Estonian geophysicist known for his work in atmospheric radiation, cloudiness, radiation transfer, and aerosol remote sensing. He graduated from Tartu University in 1956 and later established the geophysics department there. Avaste contributed to satellite data utilization in atmospheric physics and held numerous international scientific connections. He led Soviet scientific delegations and was active in yachting, serving in various roles including a judge. Avaste passed away in 1991 and is buried in Tartu.
