Obadiah Hawthorne Carter (1925-1994) was an American musician known for being a member of the R & B group the '5' Royales during the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he started as part of a gospel group called the Royal Sons before transitioning to R & B hits. His notable contributions to music included the popular songs 'You Know I Know' and 'Courage to Love'. Carter was recognized with the North Carolina Heritage Award in 1992 and was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
