Initially focused on small wood carvings, he gained prominence through works such as 'The Children of Lir' for Dublin's Garden of Remembrance. He also created notable pieces like 'Two Working Men' in Cork and a statue of James Larkin on O’Connell Street in Dublin. Kelly served as an Artist in Residence at Kilkenny Design Centre from 1966 and had previously studied briefly under Henry Moore.
