He graduated as a civil engineer from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTH) in 1975, and obtained a PhD in physical biochemistry in 1980. Harbitz has held various roles in research and public health sectors, culminating in his directorship at DSA from 1992 to 2020, during which he contributed to key publications on radioactivity.
