He earned a Doctor of Historical Sciences degree in 2002. Klimov serves as a professor at St. Petersburg University, where he heads the Department of Ancient Greek and Roman History. Previously, he was the vice-rector of Murmansk State Pedagogical University from 1991 to 2004.
