Omaira Sánchez Garzón was a 13-year-old Colombian girl who became an icon in 1985 after being trapped under the rubble following the Nevado del Ruiz volcano eruption, which resulted in 25,000 deaths and the destruction of a nearby village. The world was shocked by the footage captured by photographer Frank Fournier, showing her submerged in water up to her neck. She developed gangrene in her leg on the second day, and after suffering from hallucinations and expressing a desire not to miss school, she tragically passed away that night.
