Omar Menéndez was a 41-year-old Ecuadorian political candidate from the Citizen Revolution Movement party, running for mayor of Puerto López during the 2023 Ecuadorian local elections. Tragically, he was shot and killed on February 4, 2023, just hours before the election. Menéndez's assassination was part of a broader pattern of violence against election candidates in Ecuador, associated with rising crime rates and drug trafficking. Despite his death, he was posthumously elected as mayor, and Verónica Lucas Marcillo was appointed to replace him.
