Ong Teng Cheong was a prominent Singaporean architect and politician, serving as the President of Singapore from September 1, 1993, to August 31, 1999, and as Deputy Prime Minister from January 2, 1985, until September 1, 1993. He was the first president elected by popular vote and earned the nickname 'President of the People'. Ong was also a leader of the People's Action Party and held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Labour and Minister for Information and the Arts, before stepping down to run for president.
