He is best known for creating the Herfindahl index, a measure of market concentration, introduced in his 1950 doctoral dissertation focused on the steel industry. Herfindahl's work contributed to understanding economic competition and market structure. He passed away on December 16, 1972, while traveling in Nepal. His index is often referred to alongside Albert O. Hirschman’s earlier index, leading to its joint designation as the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index.
