After graduating from Hosei University, he joined Yamagata Broadcasting in 1983 and later transferred to Niigata Sogo Television in 1991, where he worked until 2012. He specialized in news reporting and live commentary for events such as kendo tournaments. Saitō is a skilled kendo practitioner, having achieved a rank of 3 dan.
