Óscar Humberto Mejía Víctores (December 9, 1930 - February 2, 2016) was the 27th president of Guatemala, serving from August 8, 1983, to January 14, 1986. A former member of the Guatemalan army, he presided over a period of repression and death squad activity in Central America. As Minister of Defense, he staged a coup against Efraín Ríos Montt, justifying it by claiming the government was under threat from religious extremists. During his rule, he allowed a return to democracy, which included elections for a constituent assembly in 1984 followed by general elections in 1985.
