He commanded various naval operations, notably as the Director of Naval Operations during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. Post-retirement, he was the Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand and engaged in environmental activism and rehabilitation work for the disabled. Dawson passed away in October 2011 due to a cerebral haemorrhage.
