Ösel Tendzin, born Thomas Frederick Rich Jr., was an influential American Buddhist and the principal student of Chögyam Trungpa. Empowered as the Vajra Regent and the first Western lineage holder in the Karma Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism, he significantly contributed to the spread of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. Tendzin passed away due to HIV/AIDS in 1990, leaving behind a legacy continued by his wife, Lila Rich, and his students in Ojai, California.
