He has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999 and represents the Austrian People's Party, which is part of the European People's Party. Karas has served as Vice President of the European Parliament twice, first from 2012 to 2014 and currently since 2019. He is also a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.
