Otto Gekeler was a German economist born on March 21, 1913, in Tumlingen, Black Forest. He opposed the neglect of commodity science in established economic disciplines. He co-founded the German Society for Commodity Science and Technology in 1971 and was the founding editor of the journal FORUM WARE in 1972. Gekeler served as president of the society from 1978 to 1984 and played a pivotal role in establishing the Johann Beckmann Society in 1987. He received several accolades, including the Sarton Medal in 1989 and the Johann Beckmann Medal in 1997, both for his contributions to commodity science.
