Pieter Willem Botha, known as PW and nicknamed Die Groot Krokodil, was a prominent South African politician. He served as Minister of Defence from 1966 to 1978, Prime Minister from 1978 to 1984, and State President from 1984 to 1989. He was also the leader of the National Party during the same years. Botha introduced a tricameral parliament in 1983, which included separate chambers for white, colored, and Indian voters, though ultimate authority remained with the white chamber and himself as head of state. He was succeeded by F.W. de Klerk in 1988.
