Paolo Matthiae is an Italian professor of archaeology and the history of art in the Near East at Sapienza University of Rome. He directed the Ebla excavation team from 1963 onwards, which discovered the site and remains of the ancient city of Ebla at Tell Mardikh near Sarakeb in Idlib Province, Syria. Matthiae has published numerous articles and books discussing Ebla and the history of the Mesopotamia region and Syria more broadly.
