John Eduard Touwslager, known as Papa Touwtjie, was a Surinamese reggae artist and rapper who became a significant cultural figure in the 1990s. After his prison release, he launched his music career with the album 'Gangster', becoming the first dancehall rapper in the Sranan language. His relatable lyrics resonated primarily with impoverished youth, leading to multiple hits and album releases. In recognition of his influence, he received the trotyi grani award in 1997. Tragically, he was killed by his brother in June 2005.
