Patrick Victor Martindale White (28 May 1912 – 30 September 1990) was an Australian writer who published twelve novels, three collections of short stories, and eight plays between 1935 and 1987. His prose was characterized by humor, shifting narrative perspectives, and stream-of-consciousness techniques. In 1973, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his epic and psychological narrative art that introduced a new continent in literature. He remains the only Australian to receive this award and was also the first recipient of the Miles Franklin Award.
