His works span various genres including memoirs, crime fiction, realism, and absurd fiction, translated into over forty languages. He worked as a literary translator in France during the early 1970s. Married to novelist Siri Hustvedt since 1981, they reside in Brooklyn. Auster also participated in a correspondence with South African writer J.M. Coetzee, published in 2013 as 'Here and Now: Letters, 2008–2011'.
