He studied physics, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Cologne, where he earned his PhD in theoretical physics in 1982. Busch held various academic positions, including assistant professor and adjunct professor at multiple universities. His research focused on the quantum theory of measurement, foundations of quantum physics, and quantum information theory. He was a member of notable scientific organizations and served as president of the International Quantum Structures Association.
