Currently serving as Associated Press’ deputy news director for Latin America and the Caribbean since March 2020, he previously led AP's coverage during the Ukraine war and was instrumental in their feature photography award-winning work on migration issues. Byrne's reporting career spans several continents, and he has contributed to major outlets such as RTÉ and The Guardian. Educated in business and journalism, he also holds a third dan black belt in Karate.
