Paul Ekman (born February 15, 1934) is an American psychologist and a pioneer in the study of the relationship between emotions and facial expressions. He authored "The Atlas of Emotions," which contains over ten thousand facial expressions and their relation to what a person thinks and feels. Ekman gained fame as the 'greatest human lie detector' and ranked 59th among the 100 most cited psychologists of the 20th century. His significant research demonstrated the biological interaction of emotions and affirmed the universal and distinctive nature of emotions from an evolutionary perspective.
