Paul Esswood is an English countertenor, prominent in baroque music, particularly Handel's oratorios and Bach's cantatas. He studied at the Royal College of Music from 1961 to 1964 and later at Westminster Abbey. He made his concert debut in 1971 with Handel's Messiah. Esswood has participated in over 150 recordings and has significantly contributed to the countertenor repertoire. He has taught at prestigious music institutions and collaborated in founding Pro Cantione Antiqua. His awards include the Honorary title from the Royal Academy of Music and the Deutsche Händel-Preis for his performances.
