In 1997, he co-discovered the optical counterpart of a gamma-ray burst and was part of the LIGO-Virgo team that detected the first gravitational wave. He is the principal investigator of the BlackGEM telescope array designed to find optical counterparts of gravitational wave sources. Groot earned his PhD cum laude in 1999 at the University of Amsterdam.
