Paul J. Groot is a Dutch astronomer and professor at Radboud University in Nijmegen, born on June 2, 1971. He studies ultracompact binaries and gravitational wave sources. In 1997, he co-discovered the optical counterpart of a gamma-ray burst and was part of the LIGO-Virgo team that detected the first gravitational wave. He is the principal investigator of the BlackGEM telescope array designed to find optical counterparts of gravitational wave sources. Groot earned his PhD cum laude in 1999 at the University of Amsterdam.
