Paul L. Schechter is an American astronomer and cosmologist who serves as the William A. M. Burden Professor of Astrophysics, Emeritus, at MIT. He earned his bachelor's degree from Cornell in 1968 and his Ph.D. from Caltech in 1975. Schechter has held postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Arizona, later joining Harvard as an assistant professor before moving to MIT in 1988. Elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2003, he is known for his work on the Schechter luminosity function and the Press-Schechter formalism.
