His wife, Jane Larson, suspected he was kidnapped by the Taliban, a claim the Taliban denied. In January 2017, the media agreed to keep his identity secret until his wife gave permission for public disclosure. The FBI offered rewards totaling $6 million for information related to his rescue. Overby is known for his book 'Holy Blood – An Inside View of the Afghan War' published in 1993.
