Paulo Alves Sarmento was a Timorese politician born on February 6, 1957, in Laclo, Aitemua, Portuguese Timor. He was a member of the Democratic Party and participated in the FALINTIL resistance against Indonesian occupation. Captured in 1979, he was exiled until 1987. He served in the National Parliament from 2001 to 2007, focusing on agriculture, fisheries, and environment. Sarmento was recognized for his contributions to the freedom struggle with the Ordem Nicolau Lobato award. He passed away on June 15, 2019, and was buried at the Heroes' Cemetery in Metinaro.
