Pavel Kohout (born July 20, 1928) is a Czech and Austrian novelist, playwright, and poet. He was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and participated in the Prague Spring. In the 1970s, he became an opposer of the regime, leading to his being banned from returning from Austria. He was also a founding member of the Charter 77 movement, which advocated for human rights in Czechoslovakia.
