He specialized in technical diagnostics and the theory of discrete devices. As a Doctor of Technical Sciences and Professor, he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1984. Parkhomenko founded and headed the technical diagnostics and fault tolerance laboratory at the Institute of Control Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1964 to 1993. He authored over 100 scientific papers, inventions, and patents in his field.
