He held degrees in philosophy and theology, working as a teacher and principal in various schools across Finland and as a pastor in Sweden, the U.S., and Canada. He actively contributed to educational reform discussions in the 1960s and 1970s and published over 250 columns in regional newspapers. Aukia was involved in multiple organizations and local governance, and he had five children, including notable writer Kirsti Manninen.
