After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933, he worked for various publications in Vienna and London, producing the exile chronicle Pem's Privat-Berichte. He published books focusing on emigrants and the culture of Berlin, becoming a notable figure in the exile press and contributing to various newspapers until his death.
