Helen Bates 'Penny' Chenery (1922-2017) was an influential American sportswoman best known for breeding and owning Secretariat, the legendary racehorse that won the Triple Crown in 1973. She was the youngest of three children, graduated from The Madeira School in 1939, and earned her Bachelor of Arts from Smith College. Chenery also attended Columbia Business School, where she met her husband. Her contributions to horse racing and sports have been widely recognized, including receiving an honorary degree from Randolph-Macon College.
