Per Eystein Lønning is a Norwegian cancer researcher born on September 15, 1953, known for his expertise in breast cancer. He earned his medical degree (cand.med.) in 1979 and his doctorate (dr.med.) in 1989. Lønning became a professor of internal medicine at the Department of Oncology at the University of Bergen in 1992, while also working at Haukeland Hospital. In 2001, he founded the company Cytovation and led a project that discovered a new gene variant protecting against ovarian and breast cancer. He is the son of bishop Per Lønning and brother of mathematician Jan Tore Lønning.
