Originally named David Ashworth, he adopted the name Perri 6 in 1983. 6 has been involved with Demos, a center-left think tank, and has conducted research for various governmental bodies, including the Information Commissioner's Office. He contributes to several academic journals and is a chair in Public Management at Queen Mary University of London.
