Peter Anthony Butler is a British experimental nuclear physicist, who served as a professor at the University of Liverpool. He studied at King’s College London and completed his PhD in 1974 at the University of Liverpool, becoming a professor there in 1999. His research focused on the reflection asymmetry of atomic nuclei and the structure of very heavy nuclei. Notably, in 2013, he demonstrated that certain nuclei, such as Radium-224 and Radon-220, have a permanent octupole shape. He developed significant instruments and led various experiments at CERN and other research facilities.
