He worked in statistical problems first for the Ministry of Supply and later for the Medical Research Council in the UK from 1947 to 1961. Armitage was a professor of medical statistics at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and later became Professor of Applied Statistics at Oxford, retiring in 1990. He held prominent positions in statistical societies and resides in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.
