He earned his PhD in 1982 with a dissertation on the history of Jews in Hildesheim. He has held various academic positions, including assistant and professor at the University of Göttingen, and is known for his research on Jewish history in Germany and regional history in Lower Saxony, Thuringia, and Hesse.
