Sir Peter Barter was an Australian-born businessman and politician who became a naturalized citizen of Papua New Guinea. Born on March 26, 1940, he became Governor of Madang from 1997 to 2002 and served as Minister for Health and Bougainville Affairs. He was known for his role in the Bougainville reconciliation movement and founded the Melanesian Foundation in 1980 to support remote communities. He trained as a pilot and worked for Qantas before his political career. He was knighted in 2001. Barter passed away on June 21, 2022, at age 82 in Cairns, Queensland.
