Peter Bradford Benchley (May 8, 1940 – February 11, 2006) was an American author, playwright, and ocean conservation activist best known for his bestselling novel Jaws. He co-wrote the screenplay for its film adaptation with Carl Gottlieb. Many of his works were adapted for both cinema and television, including The Deep, The Island, Beast, and White Shark. Later in life, Benchley expressed regret over his portrayal of sharks, feeling it perpetuated fear and unnecessary killing of these vital ocean predators, leading him to become an advocate for marine conservation.
