Bichsel gained prominence for his short stories and columns, with significant success from his work 'Eigentlich möchte Frau Blum den Milchmann kennenlernen' published in 1964. He also served as a personal adviser to Federal Councillor Willi Ritschard from 1974 to 1981. Bichsel writes in Swiss Standard German and contributed to the 'Schweizer Illustrierte' magazine.
