Peter E. Palmquist was an American collector, photo historian, and photographer, recognized as a leading photo historian of the 20th century. He amassed a significant collection from 1971 to 2002 and self-studied the early history of photography in the American West. He co-authored 'Pioneer Photographers of the Far West: A Biographical Dictionary, 1840–1865' shortly before his death, with a second volume published posthumously in 2005. Palmquist focused on the biographies of women photographers, creating the 'Women in Photography Archive', and contributed to the history of photography in California.
