He gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s by creating hundreds of covers for science fiction novels, noted for his detailed spaceship renderings against vibrant space backgrounds. His distinctive style influenced a generation of science fiction illustrators and concept artists. Elson passed away in March 1998 in Skegness due to a heart attack, shortly after completing artwork for a holiday camp. His works were inherited by his sister.
