He started his writing career at nineteen and contributed to publications like Encounter and Botteghe Oscure. He wrote scripts for BBC's Third Programme and won the ATV prize for a play on Granada Television. His first novel, Negatives, earned the Somerset Maugham Award in 1965, written in just three weeks. He passed away on December 2, 1999.
