Peter George 'Pete' Peterson (born June 5, 1926) is an American businessman, investment banker, philanthropist, and author. He served as United States Secretary of Commerce from February 29, 1972, to February 1, 1973. He founded the Peter G. Peterson Foundation in 2008, focusing on public awareness of financial sustainability issues in the U.S. He co-founded the private equity firm Blackstone Group in 1985 and was a long-time leader at the Council on Foreign Relations. He was ranked 149th on Forbes' list of wealthiest Americans in 2008.
