Peter Giese was a German geophysicist and geologist, born on August 6, 1931, in Berlin. He studied geology at the Free University of Berlin and earned his doctorate in 1956 with a focus on seismology. Giese became a professor of geophysics at the same university in 1970 and led the Geophysical Institute until his retirement in 1998. He is known for his work in refraction seismics, particularly in the Alpine region, where he developed crustal models that still hold validity today. He was awarded the Gustav Steinmann Medal in 1997.
