Post-war, he worked as a radiographer in Kiev before relocating to Canada in 1992. Despite his military accolades, he struggled for recognition of his service in Canada, where he became a citizen. Gitelman passed away at age 90 due to complications from surgery on March 10, 2008, in Montreal.
