He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2007 for his discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) technology, which revolutionized data reading technology for hard drives. He shared the prize with Albert Fert from Paris, who made significant contributions in the same field. Grünberg was known to practice Roman Catholicism.
