Peter Higgs (29 May 1929 – 8 April 2024) was a British theoretical physicist and a former professor at the University of Edinburgh. He is famous for his contributions to the theory of weak interactions and broken symmetry. Higgs explained the origin of mass in elementary particles, particularly through the Higgs mechanism, crucial to particle physics. His prediction of the Higgs boson, a particle theorized to acquire mass through its interaction with the Higgs field, was confirmed by CERN in 2012. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 for this discovery.
