Peter J. Countryman was an American social activist and civil rights leader, born on April 13, 1942, in Chicago. He founded the Northern Student Movement at Yale University in 1961 and directed a tutorial project aimed at aiding minority teenagers in Philadelphia. A co-founder of People for Human Rights in 1967, Countryman was active in civil rights and social justice efforts. His journey included a visit to Cuba with the Venceremos Brigade in 1970. Unfortunately, he contracted HIV/AIDS through IV drug use and passed away on October 15, 1992, in West Lafayette, Indiana.
